100 Million Strong: The Rapid Rise of ChatGPT
The Rapid Rise of ChatGPT or Google vs. ChatGPT: Who Reigns Supreme
The rapid rise of ChatGPT is the latest phenomenon in tech. ChatGPT has created a buzz – at least in my circle. When conversing with folks who aren’t tech-savvy or intrigued by technology, they’re often clueless about ChatGPT. After giving it a spin, they quickly shut their laptop and say “It’s cool, but what’s the big deal?”
Hidden in space for many, a revolutionary wave is sweeping across our world and transforming every aspect of our lives. Unfortunately, change can be a daunting and uncomfortable experience for some.
The Three Crossroads of Change: Which Path Will You Choose?
To quote Jim Brett, former CEO of J Crew and President of West Elm, “Change brings added complexity to our lives, and that’s why it’s so difficult for most people.”
When faced with the introduction of something disruptive and game-changing, we are presented with three choices:
- Ignore it
- Fight it (legally) or
- Embrace it
Unleashing the Power of Innovation: ChatGPT Soars to 100 Million Users in 2 Months
You can try to hold it back, but progress and innovation are unstoppable forces. ChatGPT took the world by storm, amassing a whopping 100 million users in just two short months since its launch on November 30, 2022. This lightning-fast adoption makes it the quickest embraced technology in all of human history, by far.

As one of the first 2 million users, I’ve been using ChatGPT on a daily basis for my work as a digital marketer. The learning curve has been steep, but I’m constantly in awe of its capabilities. I initially tried Jasper as an AI writing tool, but ended up cancelling the subscription temporarily as I just wasn’t feeling the love. ChatGPT, on the other hand, is incredibly intuitive and user-friendly, and the results are simply surprisingly good.

Ads are dominating the initial section of the Google search results, completely overpowering the user experience.
Ads Over Answers: The Truth About Google’s SERP
ChatGPT delivers results with precision and clarity – it’s exactly what I was searching for (of course, it’s always wise to verify the information with additional sources). On the other hand, Google’s SERP is cluttered with paid ads and sponsored content that take precedence. The true nature of Google’s revenue generation strategy becomes evident – monetizing ad space to bring in big bucks.
However, the Google search results page is not just cluttered with advertisements, pictures, and prioritized paid results. I struggle to spot what I was actually searching for right off the bat. I’m forced to delve deeper, click after click, until I finally stumble upon the sought-after solution.
The Future of Search: A Conversation with ChatGPT
What’s your pick for the best result page? In my view, the Google result page has gotten overwhelmingly cluttered and confusing. On the other hand, the result page on ChatGPT is sleek and straightforward. Not only that, but I can have an ongoing conversation with ChatGPT to clarify any confusion I may have. This conversational approach is revolutionizing the game, taking the user experience to new heights!
At the recent World Economic Forum in Davos 2023, the Microsoft CEO proclaimed, “ChatGPT is the world’s greatest teacher and every child on earth has access to this marvel!” This is not just a revolution, it’s a seismic shift that will alter the fabric of our world as we know it.
Apple’s Impact on the Tech Industry: How They Changed the Game with Simplicity and Convenience
Let’s take a moment to delve into why I am absolutely thrilled about this tool and the ongoing advancements in AI. My background is a combination of banking and IT, with a focus on marketing. Currently, I’m living the digital nomad life and working in digital marketing, keeping a close eye on everything happening in the AI, marketing and tech world. My interest for this field all started 12 years ago when I attended an executive course in banking (yes, banking). It was a 12-month program I attended, consisting of 12 modules spread out over 2 1/2 days each month.
As part of the management course in Switzerland, each participant was tasked with delivering a lively 30-minute presentation on a topic of their choice. My chosen theme was a thought-provoking exploration of “How Swiss Private Banking can learn from Apple.” Being a proud Swiss myself, I was particularly intrigued by this subject. This was during the time when the revolutionary iPad was making waves in the global market and the Private Banking sector in Switzerland was only presenting numbers to their rich clients without linking it to a broader picture for them to understand.

I poured my heart and soul into researching the phenomenon “Apple,” delving deep into books and articles, and eventually making up my own conclusions. At that time 12 years ago), I was still very much entrenched in the Windows/Microsoft world, so comparing and contrasting a tech giant with Swiss Private Banking was an enlightening journey for me.
Why Apple Users Never Look Back: The Convenience of a Seamless Experience
How did Apple soar to overwhelming success? What are the key ingredients to their product excellence and how do they captivate consumers with their marketing magic? To me, there wasn’t much difference between a Dell or HP laptop and a MacBook. Both had the basics in it – a processor, CPU/GPU, memory, storage and a monitor. But while Windows was prone to daily crashes (remember this was 2010/11) and drivers often malfunctioned with peripheral devices, Apple just worked seamlessly – at least that’s the impression they gave most folks.
Apple masterfully masked the intricate technology with a captivating user experience that simply functioned. Its users were spared from the headaches and frustrations of the Windows realm. During this era in 2009/10, Apple introduced a touch screen revolution called iPad that allowed people to effortlessly navigate with soft, fluid gestures, using a simple swipe instead of pressing forcefully a keyboard or a mouse on our desktop.
Why Some Businesses Fail and Others Succeed: The Key to Success Revealed
In a nutshell, my verdict was that Apple products are a breeze to use. Thanks to the cutting-edge touch screen, the interaction is more seamless and the user experience is elevated, leading to increased user satisfaction. To lighten the mood in the classroom, I quipped to the bankers, “If you treated your significant other like you treat your iPad, they’d love you even more!” The room erupted with laughter from the participants.
Just visualize how people played on their shiny new iPads at that time. Possessiveness and protectiveness came very naturally as they tote it everywhere – from lounging by the pool to taking it into the bathroom and even bringing it to the couch for TV time. Their iPad was treated like the most priceless treasure in the universe.
Unveiling the secret behind Apple’s success, I have identified three key elements that embody their triumph in layman’s terms:
- SIMPLICITY
- CONVENIENCE, and
- USER EXPERIENCE

These three words serve as a litmus test for determining the success of any business or concept. And, I am proud to confirm that ChatGPT exemplifies all three traits with ease.
Allow me to highlight a few reasons why ChatGPT stands out in terms of its convenience, despite its imperfections by showing you some results of various prompts I am using almost every day.
The Shocking Truth: Prompt Engineering Outperforms Google’s SERP Results
Gazing at the awe-inspiring outcomes from ChatGPT, the potency of AI and prompt engineering is vividly apparent. I am still flabbergasted by the spectacular achievements one can attain with carefully crafted prompts. Let me present you with some phenomenal examples:
Prompt: write me a table for the following wine types and fill out the following attributes:
wine types: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Nebbiolo, Malbec
attributes: characteristics, bouquet, location where grown, alcohol, matches with what food
Prompt: give me 10 creative ideas to market solar panels and solar batteries
Prompt: Write 3 creative facebook posts for the following product including click baiting headlines, catchy text and relevant hashtags.
Product: Battery pack inverter for load shedding
As a complete newbie in the world of coding, I am eager to dive into this exciting and challenging field. This is one of the most influential areas of ChatGPT:
Prompt: create HTML, CSS and JavaScript for a tool that does the following:
“Promille calculator that gives you the level of alcohol in your blood based on gender, age, weight, number of different drinks (beer, wine, whisky or cocktails) and time (number of hours) of beginning of drinking. Use a combination of the Widmark and Seidl formula.”
Where Google Shines: The Unbeatable Areas of Excellence
Google may struggle with certain search inquiries, but fear not! There are many areas where Google reigns supreme and will continue to outshine ChatGPT in the future. Below you will find some examples:
- Search Query: The 10 best Battery Packs for load shedding
- Search Query: where can I buy the newest ON running sneakers
- Search Query: need a plumber nearby
Google’s Worst Nightmare Comes True: The Rise of ChatGPT
So why did Google nevertheless sound the alarm and declare a “code red” internally when ChatGPT rocked the market and took over by force within a couple of weeks? To truly grasp the magnitude of the situation, you must dive into Google’s business model and see why this could be the first true challenge it has faced in the past 20 years of existence. Google was seemingly caught off guard by the sheer brilliance of ChatGPT/Open AI and its unparalleled abilities.
Check out the chart below, showcasing Google’s revenues and revenue from advertising over the years:
Google in Danger: $32.48 Billion at Risk from ChatGPT
Wow, in 2022 Google’s Advertising Revenue from Google Search was a mind-blowing $162.45 billion! Can you imagine? But what exactly does this mean? To understand it better, let’s break it down.
Google classifies its search queries into four different categories:
- Informational
- Navigational
- Commercial, and
- Transactional.
Unfortunately, it’s not possible to know the exact percentage of informational search queries for Google since this information isn’t publicly available and can change over time. However, it’s widely believed that a substantial portion of Google’s searches are for informational purposes. Let’s take a wild guess and say that 50% of all queries are informational. That would amount to a jaw-dropping $81.22 billion in advertising revenue!
Imagine this: ChatGPT, and other bots like it, are so adept at answering informational queries that they could potentially steal 40% of all informational queries from Google in the next couple of years. The staggering figure that Google is facing to loose is:
A loss of $32.48 billion in advertising revenue.
No wonder Google has sounded the alarm with an internal “code red”! Of course, this is just a rough estimate, as the actual numbers are not readily available to the public.
ChatBots Unleashed: Microsoft and Google Push the Boundaries of AI Technology
Over the past few days, Microsoft and Google have made a splash with their latest advancements in ChatBots and integration into their search powerhouses, Bing and Google respectively.
In particular, Google made a thrilling announcement about their brand-new product, “Bard.” While the presentation may have been a bit hazy, leaving much to the imagination, it still sparked excitement about the potential integration of Bard into the Google ecosystem.
Google’s Newest Creation: The Mysterious Bard Unveiled
However, the demonstration left much to be desired, as a single question posed to ‘Bard’ resulted in an erroneous response. The outcome of the event was a sharp drop in Google (or Alphabet) stocks, with a 7% decrease the following day.
Bing + ChatGPT = The Ultimate Search Experience?
Simultaneously, Microsoft stunned the world by showcasing the beta integration of ChatGPT (also known as GPT4-Bot) into Bing search engine. The demonstration was a feast for the eyes, showcasing the Bot’s remarkable ability to provide spot-on answers and seamless integration into the search engine.
Take a gander at the screenshot below, where the ChatBot can be seen snugly nestled into the right-hand sidebar of Bing, ready and eager to assist with any inquiry.
Google in Crisis: The Innovator’s Dilemma Strikes Again
For the first time ever, Google is facing a major challenge to its business model from a revolutionary new technology. Unfortunately, the company was caught off guard and their response to the emerging threat from ChatGPT has been underwhelming and indistinct. Some may argue that Google is playing it safe due to potential risks to their reputation, but in my eyes, this is merely a convenient excuse.
Google seems to have fallen into the Innovator’s Dilemma – a concept explored in the eponymous book. For those unfamiliar with the concept, allow me to briefly summarize it (as generated by ChatGPT):
“The Innovator’s Dilemma” is a book written by Harvard Business School professor Clayton Christensen. The book was first published in 1997 and has since become a classic in the field of innovation and technology management.
In the book, Christensen argues that established companies often struggle to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to innovation. Despite having resources, market position, and expertise, established companies are often slow to embrace new technologies and business models that could threaten their existing businesses. As a result, these companies can become vulnerable to disruption by smaller, more nimble competitors.
Christensen suggests that the root of the problem is that established companies are too focused on optimizing their existing businesses and fail to invest in disruptive innovations that could ultimately overtake their current offerings. The book provides a framework for understanding and managing the risk of disruptive innovation and offers practical advice for companies looking to stay ahead of the curve.
